Pharmacy Closures in Jacksonville Leave Families Waiting for Critical Medications

Jacksonville pharmacy closures medication delays – News4Jax online article | August 2025

Families on Jacksonville’s Northside are now facing serious delays in accessing prescriptions. With recent closures of Walgreens at Gateway and Soutel, plus Harvey’s supermarkets converting into Aldi’s, only two major pharmacies remain in the area.

Long Delays, Lost Prescriptions

The shortage is overwhelming the few pharmacies left. At Walgreens on Lem Turner Road, patients report hours-long lines, lost prescriptions, and false notifications saying their medication is ready when it is not.

Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman has seen the problem firsthand. She noted that thousands of residents now depend on just one location, creating long wait times and dangerous shortages.

One resident told News4JAX that it took 14 days for her sister to receive post-surgery pain medication because the pharmacy lacked stock. “She’s so scared that if she needs more medication, she can’t get it filled in time,” the woman said.

How Closures Create “Pharmacy Deserts”

These closures are not just an inconvenience. They create pharmacy deserts—areas where patients cannot access timely, affordable prescriptions. For families dealing with chronic illness, surgery recovery, or emergencies, this can be devastating.

When patients wait days or weeks for treatment, they face longer recovery times, more ER visits, and higher healthcare costs.

RescueMeds’ Mission: Access Without Barriers

At RescueMeds, we see the same risks play out in workers’ compensation. Injured workers often face PBM restrictions, insurer denials, and pharmacy shortages. These delays harm recovery and drive up costs for everyone.

Our mission is to remove barriers to care by shipping medications directly to patients, at no cost to them. We fight PBM interference, advocate for fair reimbursement, and ensure workers get the treatment they need—without waiting weeks in line.

The Bigger Issue

Pharmacy closures in Jacksonville are part of a larger national crisis. Corporate consolidation, PBM pressure, and staffing shortages are pushing pharmacies out of communities that need them most.

RescueMeds stands with patients, providers, and advocates calling for fair access to care. No family, no worker, and no community should ever be left without the prescriptions they rely on.
